The Peter Principle

My understanding of the principle must be stated first. An individuale is able and confident in his ability to do something, but when he is promoted and given a new task he task on more responsibility. He might even take on some things that he has never done before, and may make a total fool of himself by not doing what he is suppost to do. The example that come to mind is a girl I once worked with at Office Max. We were both cashiers but she had more cofidence then I did behind the contor. I was more of the type that like to work on the sales floor I didn't like working be hind the contor at all. Anyways one day I was the first cashier on duty and it was sunday the day of our big sales, so customers would come in with the news paper in their hands saying they wanted some iteam for the amount listed. Well when you would go to check them out with iteam that was listed in the newspaper for the amount would not ring up at the same amount. So I was forced to ask my manager, which would end up making the manager make me feel like i was stupid and the customer would also treat me like crap. Neither of them would care anough that it wasn't my falt, it was the computer itself because no one had keyed in the price change. It didn't matter though cause people like treating others like shit, and making them feel like they are lower than dirt. Later that day when it came time for another cashier to come in(like my back up person) I beg my manager to put me as back up cashier because, not only was more experienced but she was more confident also. My manager ended up changing me to back up cashier. When I went to tell the girl about the situation and how to override it she acted like I was stupid because she didn't understand, so when the situation happened I wanted to go back and say I told you so, but I didn't. She proble would not have even understood that.

I feel that when certain individuals act like that, its because they don't care, or they are just incabable of understanding. People more and more now days are given jobs or promotions without even undersatanding what they are appling for. they are given the promotion because either they need a quick fix to a problem and they just put someone there, or a person thinks to highly of an individule and expects them to know what they are doin but inturn they realy don't.
